Willem van Beelen has started at a very young age to build on his artistic career, he started with painting in Italy, in Correggio hometown of “Il Correggio” also known as Antonio Allegri, where he met an old professor in Art History who invited him to take acknowledge of the use of oil colours.
This professor opened the door to a new phase in his life and he learned to use the oil paint , painting became his language, his pictures were outlooks on another world, in which Willem van Beelen expressed his bewilderment and his alienation face to face our world as it is. The technical precision and the perfection of craftsmanship in these pictures made critics enthusiastic. Today these paintings still do not fail to impress the observer, they are shocking and irritating, but to Willem van Beelen, they were a relief, they made him free for new ways of looking at the world and ready to set forth in new artistic directions.
In Italy his eyes met the great painters and the great sculptors of passed eras and from than his life was really dedicated to art in all his forms. He followed his great model Michelangelo and concentrated on sculpture. He began working with clay and marble, but very soon he discovered a material that fascinated him more and seemed to be more suitable for his style of working : bronze. It is certainly not by chance that this acquaintance with this material- to which he remained faithful up to now – coincided with his return to his home country. Here he taught himself the art of founding: from the initial designs to the final patina.
Van Beelen, however, has not discovered “his” material, he also discovered “his” motif. The Arabian horse came in his life .
